Silencing alerts for known errors
Stop alert emails for an error you have already dealt with, either for a single issue or for a whole stream.
When to use this
Use this guide when a stream keeps alerting you about an error you already understand and have decided to live with, and the noise is burying the failures that matter. You can silence alerts for one specific error, or for a whole stream. Silencing is also called muting; the Control Panel labels it Silence.
Silencing stops the alert, not the failure. The event still fails, the issue stays open, and it still appears in the Issues table for that stream. For what alerts cover in the first place, see How alerting works.
Before you start
You need the Owner role. Silencing is part of a stream's configuration, and Operators and Viewers cannot edit configuration. See Managing users and permissions.
Be sure the error is genuinely harmless. Silencing a real failure means nobody hears about it. If you are not sure, work through I received an alert — what now? first.
Steps
Silencing alerts for one error
In the Control Panel, go to Streams and open the stream.
Open the Alert Configurations tab.
Click the edit icon at the top right of the panel.
Under Silence alerts by error message, type part of the error into Search open issues by error message. This filters the stream's open issues; it does not silence anything on its own.
Tick the issues whose alerts you want to stop. Each one you tick appears below under Patterns to add, and the count beneath tells you how many open issues your selection silences in total.
Click Update Stream to save.
Silencing every alert for a stream
Open the stream's Alert Configurations tab and click the edit icon.
Tick Silence all alerts for this stream. This stops every alert notification for the stream, whatever the error.
Click Update Stream to save.
Letting the alerts through again
Open the stream's Alert Configurations tab and click the edit icon.
Click the bin icon next to the pattern you no longer want to silence, or untick Silence all alerts for this stream.
Click Update Stream to save.
What you should see
The Alert Configurations tab lists what is currently silenced: whether all alerts are off for the stream, and every error message pattern in place.
On the Streams list, a muted-speaker icon appears in the Active column against any stream with silencing in place, so what is silenced stays visible without opening each stream.
Alerts for the silenced errors stop arriving. Alerts for anything else on that stream carry on as before.
If it did not work
Alerts are still arriving for the error you silenced. Check the error message in the new alert against the pattern you saved. A pattern silences its own error and others that closely match it, but an error that differs in more than the detail — a different failure at a different step — is a separate issue and needs its own pattern.
Nothing was saved. Searching and ticking alone change nothing: the selection only takes effect when you click Update Stream. Leaving the form with Cancel discards it.
You cannot edit the stream. Only Owners can change a stream's configuration. Ask the Owner for your organisation to make the change.
How it works
Selecting an issue silences alerts for that error and for others that closely match it — 90 per cent or more. That is deliberate: the same underlying failure often arrives with a different order number or SKU in the message each time, and matching on the whole string would mean a new pattern every day.
Silencing acts on notifications only. The issue stays open and the failed events are still there to inspect and replicate once you fix the cause. To see what is still failing on a silenced stream, use View this stream's issues on the Alert Configurations tab.
